Information about neighbourhood watch

Although we have had the odd burglary from time to time, we’re not in a high-risk crime area. The reason we formed a neighbourhood watch scheme was to ensure that the village remains as free as possible from burglary and other crimes

How it operates

The village is covered by ten coordinators who look after between 15 and 25 houses each, depending on the geography. Under the chairmanship of an area coordinator, regular committee meetings are held and the occasional public meeting. Through these meetings, our activities are agreed and organised. We also produce a newsletter from time to time.

Coordinators are pleased to look after your property when you are away. They also have access to marking equipment and have direct contact with Harrogate police on the ring around computer system, which enables information to be passed on to coordinators without delay.

All we ask householders to do is check that their security protects them from the unwanted attention of thieves.

If you were burgled, could you honestly say to the police “I did everything I could to prevent this crime”? If you couldn’t answer positively then please take some action. Your coordinator will be only too pleased to discuss preventative measures.

To help finance our activities a voluntary one-off payment of £5 is suggested. Should you see anything suspicious no matter how trivial, please telephone the police on the new non-emergency number, 101, or if you think it is urgent, then dial 999.
